Master Bath

The one thing I knew when designing my master bathroom was that I wanted it to be ALL WHITE.  When I would browse Pinterest and screen shot Instagrams the bathrooms I liked always had a bit of color or at least black integrated into them but I knew I wanted to start with an absolutely clean slate and go from there.  My contractors and architect thought I must be exaggerating my commitment to the allwhite theme and were always making jokes about gifting me bright pink towels.  Um no.

One of my favorite parts of the house overall is the thin little windows on the east side of the house (a direct result of this pin) and I think they are the most fun in the master bath.   From the shower the little window perfectly frames a sliver of downtown.  At the sinks a chunk of sunshine divides the mirror.  There is a sky light too so this means there the space is bright all day.  I am pretty sure my neighbors could see right in if they wanted too but that’s a small price to pay for natural light in my book.

The tile was the first thing I picked for the bathroom.  I have always loved Heath Ceramics and love supporting California based brands soI pretty much only looked there.  It was absolutely the right choice for my all white vision.  The tiles are handmade and the small irregularities really soften the overall feel.  I wanted to be sure there was some texture to the space so the white did not look too institutional and starting with Heath definitely helped.  Even their whitest white isn’t too blinding.  I ended up with a matte finish hexagon for the floor (they recommended the matte for a floor for less slip) and a subway-like tile with a slight gloss for the walls.

For the cabinets I did get my glossy white though.  This was for more practical reasons.  The extra glossy look is done with a coating which is much more durable than paint so you do not have to worry about dings and scratches.  Hooray!  The cabinet hardware is from Rejuvenation.  I liked the slightly industrial look of these pulls and really really loved the matching little knobs.  I went with a satin nickel to avoid pesky finger print smudges and such.

For the sinks I loved the idea of round and went with the most basic version I found from Kohler.  The faucets are also from Rejuvenation.  I originally had something else in mind but spotted these when they had just been released and immediately switched them in.  I did the same sink and faucet for every bathroom in the house and the X style of the knobs paired nicely with the shower fixtures without looking like I tried to match them exactly.  Since all the drawer pulls were brushed I thought the polished nickel was a good small bit of contrast.

The light fixtures on the mirrors are from Roll & Hill.  They make the most beautiful fixtures and chandeliers and I want everything on their site.  They are not cheap though so luckily this was the only room I could not resist sneaking them into to.  Check out their site – its so amazing!

The other essential item for me was the heated towel rack.  This is really sort of absurd to have in LA.  And equally absurd that growing up in Northern California we always had them in the house but they are truly amazing.  My mother always refused to let me turn them up past the lowest setting as though the house was going to burn down or something.  I think she thinks they are a utility item – like they dry your towel faster?  Who is showering that many times a day?  No, they are a straight up luxury but a true delight.  A warm towel is like a hug from a friend.   Seriously guys, you need one.  Runtal’s are my personal favorite because the flat panels mean more surface area of your towel is exposed to heat.  Win!  Obviously the white version was perfect for my needs but they have tons of colors and will even paint match.  I barely had a wall large enough in this space so mine is only 16” wide but they come in several sizes and I would recommend going as wide as you can so you could hang your towel unfolded if possible.  Trust me.

The counter top storage containers are from a trip to Amangiri in Utah.  This is probably my favorite hotel ever (and the nicest place I have ever been) and I was going to bring any part that I could back to LA with me.  I bought these an entire year before I moved in but they add just the right amount of color to my all white vision.  It was awhile before I added any more visible accessories.  When I decided it was time, I hit up The Line because everything there is #goals.  I was hesitant for like one minute about adding brass into the mix but decided matching all the metals really did not matter.  Plus I think the warm toned blends well with the storage containers.  The marble and brass mirror I had coveted for years.  It’s the only chic magnifying mirror I have ever seen and I felt one touch of glam was justified.

The Coqui Coqui diffuser is in no way an original choice but I feel like the oil releases more scent post shower when the bathroom is warm and steamy.  I could me making this up…  I went with the Lavman scent which smells extra clean and fresh.  The little shell is an oyster from the beach by my family’s house in British Columbia.  I was so excited to find a complete shell that still fit together perfectly.  It holds three of my favorite fortune cookie fortunes of all time.  The only ones I have ever saved.

I won’t get into my favorite products here but wanted to include a few pics of inside the cabinets and drawers to give an idea of the storage.  There is so much room!  All the little dividers are from the Container Store and really do make everything seem much neater right?  God, I love that store.
